Saving Voyager: IT’s Journey to the Past, Present, and Future at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory

In late 2019, NASA directed JPL to move an off-campus data center from a leased building back to the Lab. That’s when JPL learned that the Voyager mission, launched in 1977, was commanded from an operations center tucked away in a side room of the building. In just 15 months, JPL IT had to plan, test and execute a rescue mission to save the 40-year-old ground data systems, and enable a small band of dedicated operators to protect the interstellar mission’s priceless legacy.
